If you have been debating over the right Sony camera for astro photography, check out my new Article on Sony Alpha Universe! Just follow the link in my stories. ☺️ This short timelapse was taken on my trip to Iceland in March (I know, I know... I promised Patagonia photos, but I’m behind on my editing!). It was shot on my Sony A9 with the 12-24 mm f/4 (yes, I shot the aurora at f/4!). You can see the full wide crop of this timelapse in the article. ☺️ I’m happy to answer any questions you might have about shooting astro with the different Sony bodies.
Just shoot me a DM!

What is your favourite thing about coming home?
I have a tradition with my kids that we go out for dinner and catch up on my first day back. There’s nothing I love more than trading stories and having a laugh over good food.
No matter how tired I am, or what else is going on we always seem to make the time together work. Home truly is where your heart is, and mine is wherever they are.
This image was from my trip to Iceland in March. I know I promised South America pics - they are coming!
This is another shot taken on my Sony A7R III with the Sony 12-24 mm f/4 at 12 mm. I love this lens so much ♥️ And guess what finally arrived at my front door when I got home!? My very own 24 mm f/1.4. I had a chance to test out this lens during my #100NightsUnderTheStarsProject thanks to the support of @sonyalpha I fell in love with this low light monster of a lens, and had to get one of my own! It is new moon this weekend and the mountains are calling!

I am finally back to civilization after the expedition of a lifetime! I have lots of photos and videos to edit, and so many stories to share.
It’s really almost impossible to sum up in a few words an experience so big that it changes you. I’m working on an article that I hope to share soon.
To follow up on my last post, I really missed my 12 mm lens on this trip. One of the reasons I left it behind is that I thought I’d need filters and the filter system for the convex shape of the 12 mm is bulky and weighty. Second, I wanted to be able to timelapse and for that I need a fast lens (f/2.8). I didn’t use filters much at all, and I managed one timelapse. I was glad in those moments for my trusty Sony 16-35 mm GMaster but I won’t leave home without my 12 mm again. It really is my favourite wide angle lens. The 70-200 mm with the 2x converter worked pretty well, but with lens changes in the rain, it was easy to get the converter fogged up. I think on any future trips like this I would opt for the 100-400 mm GMaster. The battery life on my Sony A7R3 and Sony A9 were amazing. I could confidently hike to camp with one battery in each camera for days of shooting. And after 16 straight days of rain, I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that Sony cameras can handle any weather.
Pictures and stories from the trip are coming soon!
This image was taken in Iceland on my Sony A9 with the 12-24 mm GMaster lens. I’ll post the full crop to my stories.

I had four full days at home with my family after my trip to Iceland and now I’m on my way to Patagonia. This is my first trip to South America and I’m both excited and nervous. Part of the trip will be spent on a small ship, exploring the Chilean fiords. I’ve never slept on a boat in the ocean... The thought of stormy seas fills me with nervous trepidation.
I spent most of my four days at home packing, unpacking, and repacking my hiking bag. I had such a hard time trying to decide what gear to bring. At the last minute I chose my 16-35 mm GMaster over the 12-24 mm f/4. Somehow that was one of the hardest decisions to make. I love what I have been capturing on the 12-24 mm. This image was shot with the 12-24 mm on my A9. I love how the lens distortion at super wide angles gives me so many foreground options to work with. However, the convex shape of the lens limits filter systems that I can use. The filter system that I have for it is too bulky for back packing. The 16-35 mm doesn’t have the same focal length advantages, but it is versatile for night shooting, and is easier to fit filters to. I will also be bringing the 24-70 mm G Master, the 70-200 mm G Master, and 2x teleconverter. I also brought my RX100 VI. It’s a great trail camera that I can have in my pocket during hikes.
I’m hoping I get a chance to photograph the Milky Way from the Southern Hemisphere, as I continue to work toward my goal of spending #100NightsUndertheStars Im also looking forward to the firmware updates coming for the Sony A7R III - specifically the built in timelapse feature.
I will have limited access to the inter webs, but I’ll post and story as much as possible from the trip.
My #100nightsunderthestars Project is supported by @sonyalpha If you have any questions about my project or my gear, don’t hesitate to reach out via DM.
Thanks for looking!

The weather has been a tough challenge for aurora chasing this week, but it has given me a chance to edit some of my photos from this trip. Despite the bad weather, I feel like it was really productive, as it’s not often that I go home from a trip with so many images that I love.
It was really special to watch the aurora dance, as I work toward completing my #100NightsUndertheStars project. But these in between moments, when I’m on adventures, exploring, and seeing something for the first time, really fuel my imagination and creativity.
Thank you @dw_photo_ca For showing up in a red shirt. 😏

I’ve lost count of how many nights I’ve spent photographing stars during my #100nightsunderthestars project, and how many I spent being chased around by the clouds over the last 82 days.
I think the nights that the clouds chased us have been some of the most rewarding. This night with @missjessbess and @runsailwrite in the desert was one of those nights. We witnessed an amazing sunset, as the wind whipped the sand across the dunes. We managed to get a few shots of the stars before hiking back in the dark. An accumulation of sleep deprivation, and maybe one too many energy drinks had us falling over in fits of side-splitting laughter. It’s not the destination, as they say, but the adventure along the way. Thanks for the adventure ladies, and thank you @SonyAlpha for supporting my project. And thanks 📸@missjessbess for making me look good. 🙃

I was sure when I set out on a week long adventure to shoot the night sky in the desert that I’d get mostly clear skies. Well, that wasn’t the case. @missjessbess and I drove hundreds of miles each day in search of clear skies. But even when the skies weren’t clear, we got some pretty amazing night skies. This was a twilight shot that we managed to capture before the clouds swallowed the stars.
I shot this on my Sony A7RIII with the new Sony 24mm f/1.4 GMaster. This lens is such a dream to work with. At f/1.4 it’s super sharp, and really lets the light in as the last glow from the sun dips below the horizon. Thank you @SonyAlpha for supporting this part of my #100NightsUndertheStars project.

Together with the support of @SonyAlpha, I am chasing aurora in Iceland this week as part of my #100NightsUnderTheStars project. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I could have slept through the night and missed this moment entirely if it weren’t for my friend @dw_photo_ca waking me with excited murmurs about an Aurora. I reluctantly climbed out from under my warm covers in the camper van, grabbed my gear, and spent the next 12 hours photographing some of the most magical night skies I’ve ever been lucky enough to experience. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The black sand beach at Vestrahorn froze briefly, and transformed into an ethereal winter garden of blooming frost flowers that stretched as far as my eyes could see in the pale moonlight. The aurora danced and flickered over the icy ripples and jagged spines of the frost flowers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If this image is the only one I got on this trip, I’d go home with a happy heart. Luckily, there is a forecast for another aurora storm next week before I leave! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

In January I embarked on a personal challenge to spend #100NightsUnderTheStars It has been super challenging to say the least. The clouds have chased me hundreds upon hundreds of miles in search of clear skies, and some of the clearest nights at home in the Rockies were some of the coldest, reaching low temperatures of -35 C. It has been tiring (...if I’m honest, it’s been brutally exhausting) at times. But also so rewarding in countless ways. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have received so much support that it seems impossible to fail. My project is supported by @SonyAlpha and @BHphoto. I have also received invaluable support from friends who have driven hundreds of miles so I could sleep between shoots, and patiently encouraged me when fatigue has gotten the best of me. They have pushed me to learn and grow, even in moments when I would have rather slept. They critique my work, share ideas, and dream with me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Today I want to say a special thank you to @mrhollender, @missjessbess, @simonmikesimon, and @dw_photo_ca for being in my corner, and @SonyAlpha and @BHPhoto for supporting my creative journey. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I hope you had a chance to tune into my stories from my desert adventures with @missjessbess last week. I was home long enough to wash my clothes and recharge my batteries. Tomorrow I will land in Iceland with @dw_photo_ca . Follow along on our quest to chase aurora for the next leg of my #100NightsUnderTheStarsProject ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This image was a blue hour blend. I shot the foreground at f/11, ISO 100 for 30 seconds, and blended it with 47 stacked exposures for the sky shot at f/1.4, ISO 10000, for 3.2 seconds.

I’ll be chasing desert skies this week, as I work toward my #100NightsUnderTheStars project. And, thanks to the support of @sonyalpha for this project, I finally got my hands on the new Sony 24 mm f/1.4 to try out for astro! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve heard such great things about it. This is my first night shoot on this lens, and so far I’m a bit in love. Hehe It’s clearly super sharp, but it’s also my first time shooting night skies at f/1.4. The benefit of the wide aperture is that I can get a sky like this during twilight at f/1.4, for only 5 seconds (which means no unintended star trails) at ISO 3200 (super low noise for night shooting). I can’t wait to use it in Death Valley for the next 5 days! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
