Over the last few weeks members of our community have been visiting our altar leaving offerings in honor of friends and family that have passed away in celebration of All Souls’ Day or the Day of the Dead. The alter features traditional elements like the bright orange marigolds and a representation of the four elements. #successstartsatmcs #IamMCS #MCS2018

Just three music staff members left to introduce: Mrs. Maughan has been teaching at the Choir School since 1996. She really enjoys meeting and teaching the children of the children she taught many years ago! She teaches music to Pre-K through 2nd Grades and directs the St. Hildegard Choir. She loves teaching children to sing and discover their voices and has a passion for helping children explore the history and meaning of the music they sing and hear.
Mrs. Maughan played piano and keyboards professionally for many years at Utah Musical Theater, The Grand Theater, and the Utah Shakespeare Festival. She ran a private voice and piano studio for over 25 years and is a former choir member and section leader of the Cathedral Choir. Currently she sings with the quartet Sotto Voce and enjoys providing sacred music to various churches.
Mrs. Maughan’s interests include music and art history, listening to podcasts, short stories and biographies, NPR, and finding humor wherever possible. Her students are usually surprised by her love of super-hero movies, the Simpsons, and giant dogs. One of her favorite things is to get new music and sight-read it—it’s like opening a present! She and Dennis Maughan have been married for 35 years. She loves to hang out with her two grown sons, both of whom are marvelous singers and performers in their own right.

We are thrilled to welcome John Bergquist to the MCS music staff this year. John is a recent two-time graduate of the University of Utah School of Music. Having graduated Summa Cum Laude in Honors Choral Music Education, he returned to the U to study under Dr. Barlow Bradford and earned a Master's degree in Choral Conducting. He is eager to see what life looks like from outside a practice room, and excited to put what he has learned to work by teaching real life students! He has sung in the Cathedral Choir for the past five years and is a long time fan of The Madeleine Choir School, its mission and the high expectations its faculty sets for all students.
In his free time, John enjoys cooking, playing darts and billiards, word games, sudoku and Ken Ken, MOBAs (pubg, fortnite) and adventure games (Myst series, Obduction). He is also a James Bond aficionado - in his travels this summer he stumbled upon a London exhibit
